Subependymal Giant Cell Astrocytoma

These lesions are most often encountered in the setting of tuberous sclerosis, sometimes constituting the initial clinical presentation. The tumor cells typically have abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and often exhibit prominent nucleoli . The glial nature of the neoplastic cells composing this tumor is far from universally accepted; many examples fail to show immunopositivity for GFAP, and immunopositivity of some neoplastic cells for the neuronal marker neurofilament protein may be demonstrated. Nevertheless, the subependymal giant cell astrocytoma is traditionally grouped with the astrocytic neoplasms, and shares with the pilocytic astrocytoma and pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma a more indolent behavior and better prognosis than that of the fibrillary astrocytomas.
